King Barrow School - Language and Culture

In King Barrow's Language and Culture lessons we have been learning all about 'Portland at War'. As part of this project learners have been researching and presenting their findings about three major conflicts that had a significant impact on Portland (English Civil War, Spanish Armada and WWII).

As a school team, we've been overwhelmed with the research techniques deployed by King Barrow learners including visits to local museums, emails to national museums and international experts, video interviews with family members and the collection of primary sources of information.

Dorset Dignitaries

After the Ceremony of the Keys, IPACA pupils got to talk to Dorset Dignitaries.

The IPACA singers spent time talking to the Lord Lieutenant about his role as the Queen's representative. He explained that he attends events on behalf of the Queen in Dorset if the Queen is unable to attend personally. They learnt that he would be her representative until his death. They asked questions about his ceremonial sword and gloves.



Rosie spent time with the High Sheriff of Dorset. He explained that his role changes annually, so that he would only be in post for one year. He was wearing the traditional High Sheriff costume. He also had a young cadet with him, who was being trained for civic duties. The High Sheriff would like to visit IPACA.



The Portland Mayor, Sandra West, has expressed a wish to return to IPACA and meet and work with us. After the Ceremony of the Keys, Sandra thanked the IPACA pupils personally and then invited the whole community gathered to join her for refreshments, which we did. She also mentioned other civic services which IPACA are invited to be part of.

The Mayor of Portland, Sandra West, invited IPACA to be part of Ceremony of the Keys.

IPACA were represented as a guard of honour and also had a representative from every school singing ;including Discovery.

Miss Axford organised four Perryfield Pupils who acted as a Guard of Honour and helped the younger pupils.

Ms. Winsborough sang a duet with Mrs Fryer and then added impressive harmony to the Portland Community Singers performances.

Mrs Fryer put the Portland Community Singers together during the summer holidays and conducted and spoke at the service.

The Portland Community Singers sang Plovi Barko, The Portland Hornpipe and Sailing for Gold - A Portland Shanty written by B-Side artists.

After the service, pupils got to meet and chat with the Queen's representative - The High Lieutenant of Dorset.

The Portland Mayor, Sandra West, thanked IPACA for their part in the proceedings.

The High Sheriff is very interested in coming to IPACA for a visit. Mrs Winsborough, Mrs Fryer and Rosie spent time explaining about our Academy and the new buildings at Maritime House.
