Getting ready for Accession Day in All Saints Church

I
IPACA will be represented at the Accession Day Service next Saturday by S4 at 12:45 in All Saints Church in Easton.

One of the class turned up for an early morning rehearsal with his mum, dad and teacher, on a Sunday.

He will play the organ next week during the service.

Mrs Fryer and his mum also had a go. Then they had a look around the church and spoke to the church warden, the Reverend James and a few of the congregation.

S4 class members who are taking part, will also be visiting All Saints later this week in school time, to have a dress rehearsal.

The corgi, Susan, is also coming.

Here is a short video clip of the rehearsal.

Spelling games in Gateway Base

Spellings have been a focus in Gateway base recently. To support this we have provided students with some spelling flashcards to help and a list of games to play at home.

We tested out some of the spelling games in our Wednesday Stay and Learn session this week.

Here are some games for you to enjoy at home.

Alphabetical Order
Select 10 spelling words, turn them face down and shuffle. Turn them the right way up and organise in alphabetical order. 2 Player Game - Who can sort their words the quickest?

Definitions
1 player describes what the words means the other player has to guess the word.

Back-to-Back Spelling
Working in pairs. One member of each pair uses a finger to spell the week's words on the partner's back. The partner must think about the letters being formed, identify the word and then spell the word aloud.

Hangman
Use the word cards to generate hangman games

Cut-and-Paste Spelling
Provide each student with a page from the local newspaper. Have them cut out letters from headlines, advertisements, and text, and glue those letters to a sheet of paper to spell each of the week's spelling words.

Spelling Word Memory
Using a double set of word cards and play a game of Spelling Word Memory by spreading out the cards face down and then taking turns flipping two cards at a time to find a pair!

Flip 4 Steps
In just 4 steps, your child can practise reading, spelling, and writing his words.Have him flip over a word card, look at the word, say it out loud, say the letters, then flip it back over, and write the word on paper.

Spelling Word Race
Create two teams, with a player from each team taking the ‘pen’ at a time.Teacher (or parent) calls out a word from the list, and players race to write the word.

Stairsteps
Write the words as if they are stairs, adding one letter at a time.
S
Sp

Spel

Flip and Rainbow Write
Flip a word card and have your child go through the rainbow, writing each word in rainbow colours. Make the first word red, second orange, third yellow, etc. OR write each letter in a colour of the rainbow.

Type it Out
Open up a Word document and have your child type the spelling words on the screen as you call them out.Enlarge the font, make it a cool colour, and he’ll have a ball.

Video Record
Pull out the ole video camera or flip cam and take a video of your child spelling the words. Have him put on a funny hat, dress-up, or use a silly prop to add to the fun.

Word Train
Use the letters to have your child create a ‘word train’ by using the last letter of the first word to begin the second word and so on:cat / tap / pan

Examine the Word
Really look at the words, talking about the tough parts and analysing patterns. Make up silly ways of remembering the ‘tough’ parts: ‘president’ has an ‘I’ in the middle because one day I’ll be prime minister, OR ‘setting’ has two t’s in the middle just like two tall trees in a fairyland forest.

Bod the odd and Steven the even Maths Songs in Assembly

Year five students dressed up as number crunchers to help younger pupils learn about odd and even numbers in singing assembly at IPACA Southwell Campus.
Bod likes eating odd numbers which end in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and they taste just fine.
Steven likes eating even numbers which end in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and they taste just great.

Year 4 Sphero Time

Year 4 have been teaching their teacher and their peers how to use the Sphero.

Year 5 Southwell Measuring Time

We used our measuring skills to measure 150M around the school. We had to get it up and down stairs which was the most trickiest bit. We were making a scaled measurement of the sun's distance from Earth. 1 m:1 000 000 km in our model.

A corgi, a crown and a puppet

More fantastic homework from S4.

Year 5 Southwell Ordering Decimals Game

We made our own numbers with one decimal place. We wrote our own numbers between 3 and 4. We put them in ascending order and showed everyone our numbers, and compared them. We got points for numbers with values like 3/10 or 6/10.

In a Galaxy far, far away........

In the Gateway Base we have been blown away by the efforts of the Learners with their Take Away Homework. It's out-of-this-world!
We've seen: Light Sabers, Space food, X-Wings fighters, drawings from Star Wars, models of the Solar System and letters to astronaught, Tim Peaks. We even had a Galaxy of cake!

P.E for the Gateway Base

Wednesday afternoons, the Learners from the Gateway Base are lucky enough to have their P.E session with the Royal Manor P.E teachers.

Miss Heppell's registration group have been braving the icy winds with Miss Byrne to learn the skills involved with playing hockey.

Mr Thorne's registration group have been fortunate enough to visit the dance studio with Mrs Randell. Different aspects of performing and movement have been learnt and displayed.

Mr Burton has taken Miss Mill's registration group to learn the skill of Archery. The sports hall is transformed into a shooting range for the afternoon and the children have to listen and adhere to a strict safety policy. Then they can enjoy themselves aiming for the bullseye!! Some have already shown a natural talent for the sport.

In a few weeks the Learners will rotate groups so everyone has a go at each sport.

The Scary Guy Chant

S4 have been learning The Scary Guy Chant.
They are also using Kung Fu Punctuation to learn about punctuation and capital letters.

Here is a link to a video of two pupils performing their work; using Kung Fu punctuation. They also used  their own ideas and then performed. They did this in just 5 minutes!
