Gateway Base: Making Maths Real

Today we were joined by a real land surveyor. She discussed with us the importance of using and applying Maths in everyday life and helped us see how we could use our mathematical skills to find out about objects.

We had to look around the learning base and survey lots of different pieces of furniture. We discovered some great areas of maths in the furniture. There are many different angles - If you have visited us you will see we don't have many right angles! We had to make and measure different parts, work out the area, circumference, perimeter and much more. We even had to think about the co-ordinates to help locate objects on a map.

It was a great opportunity seeing how the maths skills we learn in the classroom can be used in a real life situation.
